Plant Monsters are types of monsters that are made of plants. Various trees, shrubs, herbs, grains, flowers, and fruit appear in myths and legends as general symbols of rebirth, decay, and immortality. Some plants have acquired much more specific meaning in folklore. Plant monsters also show up in fantasy games, usually as generic first-level enemies. Plant-like creatures are beasts that basically are plant-like in origin but are not like normal plants. They often have some basic intelligence and can be carnivorous.

History[]

One of the inspirations for Venus were The Triffids. The Triffids were mobile carnivorous plants seen in Day of the Triffids, a book by John Wyndham, and several film adaptations of the same name. They are described as having no nervous system, therefore being quite unintelligent and acting only on instinct.

Another prominent influence is the character Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, a comedy horror film originally released by Roger Corman in the 1950s, followed by the more well-known musical remake in the 1980s. Audrey II bears a striking resemblance to a venus flytrap, and was discovered after a total solar eclipse by Seymour Krelborn, a guy that can't seem to catch a break.

Seymour convinces his boss to use Audrey II (who he named after his crush) to attract customers to the flower shop, and it works immediately. However, Audrey II is incredibly difficult to care for, and it takes weeks before Seymour can stop it from wilting. During his efforts to revive the plant, he discovers that it needs to consume fresh blood to survive. With Audrey II healthy and growing, the flower shop and Seymour boom in popularity. When Seymour's blood isn't enough to keep Audrey II satiated anymore, Audrey II reveals it can speak and demands more food. Seymour complies, doing terrible things to keep the plant fed in hopes of creating a better life for himself. Everything comes to an end when he realizes Audrey II is actually an alien from outer space, here with intentions to conquer Earth by breeding copies of itself, brainwashing the inhabitants to feed them, and subsequently becoming large enough to destroy the world.

Venus bears a heavy resemblance to Poison Ivy, also known as Pamela Isley, a DC Comics character and long-time enemy of Batman. Like Venus, Ivy is very concerned about the environment and also is shown to have light mind control abilities, usually seen in the form of spores. In that regard, she also has many similarities to DC character Swamp Thing.

Her "pollen persuasion" mind control may also reference the original Roger Corman version of Little Shop Of Horrors. Audrey II used mind control to make Seymour more compliant(as the original film was a low-budget production, the plant itself barely moved). This ability was left out of the more famous 1980s version but was again featured in Little Shop, a 1990s cartoon series based on the film.

Monster High[]

Generation 1[]

In this generation, there are a few well known plant monsters such as Venus McFlytrap, Crabgrass, and Amanita Nightshade. Plant monsters can be very different from each other taking on traits from different kinds of plants. Like Venus who's based off of a Venus fly trap, while Amanita is based off of a corpse flower.

Some plant monsters can also be more animal-like, such as Chewlian, Venus' pet, who is a plant monster with an animal-like behavior and appearance.

Most plant monsters aren't animal-like, similar to how dragons in Monster High can be humanoid while other dragons can be more animal-like.

Generation 2[]

Like the rest of the monster species, plant monsters in the G2 Monster High universe went into hiding following the Great Monster Fright Flight. However, the Ghoul Squad was able to find a humanoid plant monster named Venus McFlytrap, who was living in a forest surrounded by actual venus flytraps, with her attending Monster High shortly after.^[1]

Frankie and Venus later create Chewlian as a science project to see if animal-like plant monsters respond to music. He responds especially well to heavy metal music, but grows out of control, tossing the ghouls around until Operetta soothes him with her music.^[2]

Generation 3[]

In this generation, some plant monsters appear to have a dangerous reputation. Crabgrass studied witchcraft and used these abilities to steal the powers of other monsters; witchcraft was consequently banned and discouraged in the monster world as a result.

Monster High also keeps a venus flytrap monster in its Catacombs, which can prove to cause harm to students when they come across it;^[3]^[4] worse case scenario is it attacking the school on its own.^[5]

Despite this, plant monsters still appear to hold a good reputation - Autumn Patch is a famous EekToker and musician who Cleo idolises, and student Venus McFlytrap also finds comfort amongst her peers.

Description[]

Generation 1[]

Plant monsters usually have green skin and wear organic clothing. Some can also have brown skin that looks similar to a tree trunk.

Some plant monsters have more plant-like traits rather than human-like traits, like Crabgrass who only has a lower body of vines rather than having legs.

In an early webisode a plant monster named Thornton makes an appearance in Cleo's locker everyone thinking that he was a normal rose, till he reveals himself to be a new student. Thornton has small fanged teeth, a risen nose and is very small. He also uses plant leaves as his hands and feet, while still being attached to a flowerpot.

Generation 2[]

Venus McFlytrap in this generation looks identical to her generation 1 counterpart, she has green skin, multiple teeth protruding from her mouth and has vines entangled around her arms, neck, and ankles.

Generation 3[]

Venus McFlytrap in generation 3, is a tall, slender-yet-curvaceous and green-skinned teenage plant monster with leaf-shaped ears, multiple teeth protruding from her mouth, and vine-shaped markings which entangled around her legs. She sports knee-length hair which is a vibrant shade of deep-pink with green streaks, kept into loc twists. Her hair is also styled into cornrow braids on the right and she accessorized with a hair clip shaped like a lime-green flytrap (hence her name) with light pink flowers on them.

Autumn Patch is a plant monster with a pumpkin for a head, glowing eyes, and brown bark-like skin.

Abilities[]

Chlorokinesis: Some plant monsters can control plants and vegetation.
Pollen Persuasion: Some plant monsters can create pollen out of their mouths to control a person's thoughts and actions. Though usually a plant monster can only control one person at a time.
Communication: As a sentient plant, plant monsters can communicate and understand emotions from other plant life that passes by other monsters. Venus can additionally summon and communicate with Mother Nature, which she does whenever she needs advice.
