—Operetta in "Hiss-teria" |
Operetta is a 2010-introduced and all-around character. She is a phantom and a student at Monster High. As the Phantom of the Opera's daughter, Operetta is a phantom that was born in France and raised in Gnarleston. With a reputation as a diva and rebel, Operetta demands respect from her peers while rejecting etiquette, conventions, and rules. She generally avoids her fellow students to spend time in the catacombs, where she has her own theater and recording room. Music is Operetta's greatest passion, and although she is a talented singer, she does not give live performances due to her powers. She is also skilled with the guitar and organ and enjoys playing for audiences, but reserves conversations about music only for those who are as devoted to music as Operetta is. Though she typically leaves a difficult first impression, Operetta has a strong sense of justice that guides her through unlife.
Portrayers[]
In English, she is voiced by Cindy Robinson, (credited as Gigi Sarroino in Volume 2).
In Latin American Spanish, she was voiced by Martha Hernández in volume 2. She has been voiced Claudia Mota since Volume 3.
Character[]
Background[]
Operetta was born in France and moved New Goreleans with her family at a young age. Growing up on her parents' riverboat opera house in the Mississippi, [2]she drew significant inspiration from the culture in Gnarleston [3]which shaped her accent, independent spirit, love for blues and rockabilly, boat know-how, and childhood friendship with Fynn. [2]At 16, her father changed careers to become a teacher at Monster High.[4] Though Operetta did not object to moving, she was displeased with this change but gradually enjoyed being at her all-monster high school. She remains in close contact with her childhood roots and friends, especially Fynn, and regularly sends her diary pages. In return, Fynn built Operetta her emblematic custom guitar.[5]
While Operetta's heritage left a powerful mark on her love for music, she is unable to sing for live audiences as her voice has three special properties: her screams can break various materials, [6]and after an extended period of time, she is capable of disorienting her listeners [7] [8]or gaining mind-control of them. Though the latter could be useful for building her career, Operetta insists on being acknowledged for her actual skill and disapproves of using such manipulative tactics. [9]The only way to avoid her voice's magical properties is by listening to her recordings. [10]
Personality[]
Operetta is characterized as tough, determined, and as "a bit of a diva" with a "set of pipes". [11] A rebellious teenager that loathes being told what to do, Operetta is a loner who secludes herself in the catacombs of Monster High to focus on practicing music in a small amphitheater that contains a pipe organ. [12]While Operetta is mostly unfazed by personal comments, she is affected by any judgement of her music, whether it be praise [4]and mockery, [13]with the latter potentially causing Operetta to become vindictive until she is satisfied with her revenge. [10]
During her first months at Monster High, Operetta's distant personality and fierce ego made it difficult for her peers to approach her.[13] However, Operetta began making friends by joining the Skultimate Roller Maze (SKRM) team after seeing the girls being mocked for wanting to compete, even though she initially rejected it for being too "conformist". She eventually stayed on the team as she began to enjoy it. [14]
Appearance[]
Operetta is a slender and attractive, periwinkle-purple-skinned teenage phantom with darker-colored brows and pale grayish-purple eyes which protrudes long and thick eyelashes - her left eye being accessorized by a white-detailed, musical note-shaped black monocle which forms into a droopy heart. On the left side of her face, she sports a birthmark shaped like spider webs and musical notes which extends down to her neck and left shoulder, with a similarly-designed tattoo on her left arm.
Her waist-length wavy hair is colored in a shade of chili pepper-red, which sports a darker-colored gradient at the bottom and multiple black streaks - kept into a hairstyle similar to victory rolls with rockabilly bangs and a half-up hairbow. Her makeup consists of thick mascara, light orange and yellow eyeshadow, crimson-red lipstick, and ruby-red nail polish on her rather sharp finger nails. She also has a small beauty mark under the left side of her lips.
For her style and clothing, Operetta is inspired by the 50s and '60s due to being a fan of Elvis Presley; she wears a set of reverse-colored dice-shaped earrings - the right is a white dangle earring with six black dots, while the left is black with five white dots. Her black-trimmed white crop-top jacket features spiderweb patterns on around the arms and on the back, keyboard prints on the ends of the short puffed sleeves, and single button which is shaped like Skullette. Her jacket is also worn over her two-toned purple sleeveless houndstooth blouse with a popped collar, black spiderweb patterns printed all over it, and white buttons down the front. She wore a set of purple-threaded dark blue jeans which are rolled up to her calves, held up by an accessorized white belt with a spiderweb-shaped buckle, musical notes printed all over it, and three black chains with musical note-shaped charms hanging from it. Her high-heeled ankle boots are a black and white in color - with white sock-like cuffs, white shoelaces, white spiderweb patterns printed all over it, small pinkish-red spiders that accessorized the front, and black treble clef-shaped heels.
Operetta's accessories includes a keyboard-inspired bracelet on her right wrist, and a black dice-shaped ring which is worn on the finger of her left hand.
Relationships[]
Family[]
Operetta is the daughter of the Phantom of the Opera and an unnamed phantom. She considers her parents to be highly formal and elegant. Nonetheless, they allow Operetta to express herself without forcing their example onto her. [4] The family lived in France until a few years after Operetta's birth before moving to New Goreleans, where her father took a job on a riverboat opera house [2]and occasionally did voice coaching. [3]At age 16, Operetta's father would begin teaching Haunted Music as an evening class at Monster High, resulting in their relocation again. Operetta found herself happy with the change of setting after some time. [4]
It is possible that Operetta's mother was born and raised in the southeastern region of America as she has at least one grandmother that lives there. She has a good relationship with her grandmother, who is coincidentally best friends with the grandmother of Honey Swamp. [15]
Friends[]
Operetta values those that share similar cultural ties, rebellious attitudes, and a wholehearted devotion to music. Her closest friends are Fynn, Deuce Gorgon, Holt Hyde, Catty Noir, Casta Fierce, Honey Swamp, Robecca Steam, and Johnny Spirit, whom she is romantically involved with.
Fynn is Operetta's oldest and closest childhood friend who taught her how to play and build guitars. Operetta dedicates her diary entries to them, and wishes that Fynn would modernize his communications so they could keep in touch through technology instead. [4]
Robecca Steam is another old-fashioned friend of Operetta's whom she admired for establishing herself on the original SKRM team. After the SKRM team was revamped for Monster High, Operetta and Robecca played together as teammates. Operetta was the first to notice Robecca's emotional turmoil after their first game, as she was recovering from being deactivated for a century. Robecca appreciated Operetta's considerate gesture, and the two became friends. [14]
Holt Hyde is one of Operetta's earliest friends at Monster High whom she briefly had for. She eventually determined that Holt was too hot-headed for her. However, they still became close friends as the school's foremost musicians. [5]Operetta was the first person that Holt wanted to reveal to that their classmate, Jackson, was actually his alter ego; like her peers however, Operetta had been long aware that Jackson and Holt were the same person. [16]
Deuce Gorgon is also one of Operetta's earliest friends at Monster High, whom she also had feelings for briefly. As Cleo's boyfriend, Operetta decided to date him as revenge for Cleo's false accusations. However, she unexpectedly developed genuine feelings for Deuce after he described his serious bond with Cleo and abandoned her plan. [12]Instead, she helped Deuce compose a touching song for Cleo. [10]
Catty Noir became Operetta's friend after she took a hiatus from her popstar career to attend Monster High. Despite Operetta's lesser fan base, Catty Noir was similarly excited to meet her, as Catty's guitar player was a big fan that would often play Operetta's music during her tours. [17]It is presumed that Operetta befriended Casta Fierce through Catty, who is another famous musician. [Casta Fierce's profile]
Honey Swamp is another friend outside of school that Operetta met at a movie premiere. Their shared cultural roots immediately sparked their friendship, in addition to their grandmothers being best friends. [15]
Pet[]
Her pet, Memphis Longlegs is a purple spider with a pompadour and a red tie that is named after Memphis, Presley's hometown. Operetta says that Memphis Longlegs can "rock a pompadour while playing a standup bass".
Romance[]
There are three boys Operetta has had romantic feelings, and one short-lived crush.
Operetta had a brief crush on Archer, who was a new student a Monster High that many girls found attractive. However, her efforts to entice him mostly sprung from her rivalry with Toralei Stripe as they competed for his attention. [18]Archer ignores Operetta and Toralei in favor of Nightmare, a demonic horse, and both girls conclude that Archer is not their type.
Operetta's first genuine crush was on Holt, whom she only went on one date on. Although gentlemanly and passionate about music like Operetta, she found his temper unbearable after he berated a gargoyle for knocking her down at a concert, who he had not heard apologize as he was too far away. Operetta was humilated after the bouncers escorted her and Holt out of the concert. Holt attempted to apologize with flowers, but Operetta decided that their romance was over. Nonetheless, they became good friends. [5]
Operetta's second crush was on Deuce, whom she had only noticed after she was mocked by his girlfriend, Cleo de Nile. Seeking revenge over the preposterous accusation, Operetta decided to "steal" Deuce from Cleo. Unexpectedly, she and Deuce became sincerely interested in each other during their first meeting. However, Deuce told Operetta about his relationship with Cleo after she hinted that she had feelings for him. Operetta eventually realized the depth of Deuce and Cleo's relationship and decided against her revenge. Instead, Operetta understood that Cleo was insecure Deuce's feelings [12]and helped Deuce compose a song to express himself to his girlfriend. Cleo apologized to them both, and Deuce has since remained a good friend of Operetta.[10]
Operetta is in a relationship with Johnny Spirit, a talented violin player and student at Monster High who is reputed with a bad attitude and a long detention record. As the catacombs are his favorite hangout, Johnny inevitably encountered Operetta before he was headed to detention one day. Both intent claiming the catacombs for themselves, they agreed to a jam-off to determine who could spend time there. However, their hostile competition turned into a casual and fun activity after demonstrating their comparable musicality. [19]In their following meetings, Operetta and Johnny became close to each other and began a romantic relationship.[20]
Abilities[]
- Magical Voice: As a phantom, Operetta's singing and screams can cause her to break glass and quiet down everyone in the room. She is also able to disorient and control the minds of her listeners if they are exposed to her singing for a long period of time. This does not occur if they listen to a recording of her voice. But when she sneezes in "Uncommon Cold", it produces the same glass-shattering effect.
- Flight: As phantoms are a type of ghost, Operetta becomes transparent and is able to fly in the Ghost World.
- Intangibility: In the Ghost World, Operetta is also able to phase through solid objects.
- Immortality: Operetta is immortal like other ghosts.
Skillset[]
- SKRM: Operetta is a good Skullimate Roller Maze player. She hid this talent, up until she joined the new SKRM team at Monster High.
- Music: Operetta is a great singer and she can play instruments, such as her guitar, violin, and organ.

Notes[]
- Operetta's character is an elaborate play on her father's character, the Phantom of the Opera, making her the "Phantom of the Opry".
- An opry is an establishment that features live country music (rockabilly took much influence from country music). The term originated as a diminutive form of the word "opera". As per Operetta's student file, she and her parents moved from France to New Orleans, a former French colony, and her father took a job on a riverboat opera house, likely on the Mississippi River. This presumably brought Operetta in contact with Nashville, Tennessee, the "City of Music" where the Grand Ole Opry is located, and Memphis, Tennessee, where Elvis Presley grew up.
- Operetta's hairstyle is similar to Bettie Page's pinup look, and combines the "Happy Pompadour" bangs with the "Victory Roll" hairstyle.
- Her pet, Memphis "Daddy O" Longlegs, is named after Memphis, Tennessee. He sports a pompadour like Elvis Presley.
- Operetta's favorite food, fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, is a reference to an Elvis Sandwich.
- Johnny Spirit, her main romantic interest, is based on the song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", an ode to the history of Bluegrass, country, and country rock.
- In the early development of Monster High, Operetta was intended to be a introductory character. Cleo de Nile took her place instead, and cartoon and diary storylines in which Cleo suspects Deuce of replacing her with Operetta as his girlfriend are a reference to these early plans. [21]
- Her catchphrase is "Hiding Behind A Mask of Perfection".
