It could be more than a haunted house, it could be a haunted home.
Clawdeen in "The Monstering"

Monster High is the titular location of Monster High, and serves as the main setting of the series.

Description[]

Monster High is a boarding school located in a forest near a cemetery in Clawdeen Wolf's human hometown. Due to its proximity to humans, there are many rumors among humans that supernatural activity occurs, and monsters live in the forest.[1]

It is an extremely tall building resembling a medieval castle. It contains things typical of high schools: hallways, classrooms, a cafeteria, an auditorium, and dorm rooms for students to live in.

Within the school are a series of caves called the Catacombs that weave throughout the grounds. Underneath the school is a maze called the Catacomb Labyrinth.

History[]

The school was built atop a wellspring of magical power, which could only be accessed through the catacomb labyrinth. Various entrances to this labyrinth exist throughout the school grounds, each corresponding to the different species of monsters comprising the monster council: a vampire, a frankenmonster, a gorgon, a mummy, a werebeast, and a sea monster. At the center of the labyrinth was a portal to another dimension, which could only be opened using the talismans of the council.[2]

To keep humans away from the school to protect monsterkind, a magical barrier called the Shadow of Secrecy surrounds the school grounds.[3] The Shadow of Secrecy conceals the school from humans, making where it stands appear to be empty. Even humans that are part monster cannot inherently see through the veil, but talismans have the power to reveal it.[1]

Parents of the school's students can join the Monster Parent Association, which facilitates parental participation in school.[4]

Outdoors[]

Coffin Bean[]

The Coffin Bean[3] is the hottest haunted spot outside of Monster High; where students come to after school, whether they want to hit the biteology books, chit chat while playing with monster pets, or enjoy scaretastically scrumptious snacks.

It is an outdoor vendor set-up on school grounds. Its logo is a steaming pink skull-shaped teacup on a pink plate. Students ordering from the Coffin Bean must present a photo ID of themselves to Lenore (either with their phones or their student ID card), which is scanned by a skull on the countertop for payment from their personal account. Lenore may decline orders if she does not think the photo matches the person ordering.[27]

The school casketball team hosts an annual bake sale fundraiser that is also competitive. Whoever earns the most money from selling their product wins a trophy.[41]

The Catacombs[]

The catacombs are a network of caves readily accessible to students through various entrances located throughout the school.[29]

In the past, Dr. Blunder attempted to create a frankenmonster that would fiercely defend the school, but ended up creating a harmless winged dog instead. Considering this a failure, she put the dog into stasis and kept it hidden in a room in which she also performed other work within the catacombs.[5]

They briefly underwent renovations, during which it was closed to public use. When Frankie, Draculaura, and Clawdeen went inside anyway to cure Frankie of their supposed curse, they discovered Blunder's creation and named it Watzie.[5]

Entrances to the catacombs in the school include:

  • A bookshelf in a hallway[29]
  • A cupboard[29]
  • The giant portrait of Headmistress Bloodgood in her office[29]
  • A vending machine in a hallway[2]

Catacomb Labyrinth[]

An intricate maze under the school leading to a portal and a wellspring of power. Entrances to the labyrinth are located throughout the school grounds, but were eventually sealed off. Each corresponds to the species of a member of the monster council:

  • Vampire: Unknown (castle or tower)
  • Frankenmonster: Unknown (graveyard)
  • Gorgon: Unknown (tree)
  • Mummy: Unknown (pyramids)
  • Werewolf: Werewolf statue in the garden, opened by Clawdeen Wolf's necklace inherited from her mother Selena.[2]
  • Sea Monster: Unknown (rocks)

The portal in the labyrinth can be opened with a single talisman, but doing so would be dangerous; the portal can only be opened safely during a blood moon eclipse when all members of the council and their respective talismans are present.

At some point after the disappearance of Selena, the first volume of An Architectural History of Monster High (which detailed the history of the school as its founders originally intended) was taken out of print for a decade prior to the events of the series.[2]

Schedule[]

Like typical human high schools, classes are held during weekdays and are not held on weekends. As a boarding school, students live on school grounds for a majority of the semester. At least every two weeks or so, students are permitted to return home for a weekend.

Monster High's school days appear to be held at night, with most or all students sleeping during the day. This leaves places in school, such as the library, empty.[10]

Special Events[]

  • Casketball Bake Sale Fundraiser: An annual event that is also competitive. Whoever earns the most money from selling their product wins a trophy.[41]
  • Dances: They happen once every quarter.
  • Film Festival: An event in which students can create films and submit them for viewing and judging.[42]
  • Ghoul Spirit Day:A day where students and faculty bring on their spirit. [43]
  • Howl of Fame: An event in which students can create a presentation detailing the lives of a famous monster.[23]
  • Midterms: Exams students take in the middle of an academic year.[44]
  • Monster Ball: A annual dance held at the school.[45][46] It’s the monster version of Homecoming and Prom.
  • Monster High Dance-Off: An annual dance competition held in the clawditorium, for which students participate in pairs designated by the event organizer. Students are required to participate for their grades and are given 24 hours from their invitation to choreograph a dance.[16]
  • Monster High Talon Show: A talent show where students are given a chance to perform in front of fellow students and their families.[47]
  • Nightmore: The longest night of the year that monsters celebrate friendship on. The school recognizes this holiday and permits students to leave to celebrate.[48]
  • Picture Day: A day where students are scheduled throughout the day to have their fearbook and student ID photographs taken. These photos are taken with a special monster camera that can capture the subject's true inner essence.[27]
  • Scareer Day: [49]
  • Scare-itage Festival: A day in which students create presentation tables to showcase information to others about their monster heritage, abilities, traditions, and history.[17]
  • School Plays: The school hosts theatrical performances held in the clawditorium.[11]
  • Scare Rally: A casketball game between the students and the teachers.[50]

Trivia[]

  • Monster High has infinite staircases.[51]
  • The school has up to at least 130 students, as the fearleading squad greeted 126 families on Family Day.[52]
