Monster Fest is a 2024 line of Monster High dolls based on the special episode of the TV series. The line was released early in Walmart stores in May 2024 but officially released on August 13, 2024. This line features the core ghouls attending a music festival, including Clawdeen Wolf, Cleo de Nile, Frankie Stein, and Lagoona Blue. Additionally, this line includes a playset named Fangtastic Rockin' Food Truck, which features an exclusive character, Draculaura.

Characteristics[]

The four main dolls in this line each come with a poster of their favorite artist performing at Monster Fest (or a group shot of them all together in Frankie's case), a ticket and wristband for attending the festival, a ring, a food and drink, a camera, and a purse that opens from the top to insert all the accessories. The outfits are characterized with headbands, earrings, necklaces, belts, glasses, and jackets.

For the playset, Draculaura comes with a food truck that converts into a stage, equipment for cooking, such as food items and a chip basket, and equipment for performing, such as a guitar.

Fiction[]

This line was promoted through a promotional music video on YouTube and a TV special from the Nickelodeon animated series. However, both have drastic differences in how they portray the story of the doll line.

As explained in the TV series, Monster Fest is a music festival founded by the twin spider brothers, Trick and Treat, and their helpers, the Weblings.

The TV series' story follows Frankie Stein being voted as "Head Haunter", meaning they're in charge of overseeing the events and making sure everyone's satisfied. Frankie has to team up with the Boo Crew and famous transwoman musician, Phoenix, to save the Fest and "weave their own web".

In the "Welcome to Monster Fest" music video, the Boo Crew arrive at the fest and have VIP backstage passes to meet Catty Noir, who is performing the opening act. However, disaster strikes when Catty loses her voice, meaning she can't perform, so Frankie steps in to begin an impromptu concert with their ghoulfriends, with them all still getting the chance to hang out with Catty.

Other notable aspects include Catty not being seen or mentioned in the TV special, with the same for Pheonix in the doll line and music video. Clawdeen's doll also comes with a poster of the Hissfits, suggesting they are performing at the festival, but this is not the case in the special. The music video also seemingly treats Monster Fest as an off-campus event, especially with the doll logs at the back of the boxes explaining how the crew have "scored tickets" to the fest, yet the special showcases it as an event right in front of Monster High instead.

Frankie Stein is still presented as a notable character in both stories, revealing that they are portrayed as the main character of this line. Their headband is actually centered around the Head Haunter badge, which is placed in the middle.

The franchise has also released an extended play to promote the line; the only song in it directly connected to the line is the aforementioned "Welcome to Monster Fest", although it also includes "Make Your Own Luck", Catty's character song, which is notable as Catty herself is prominently featured in the Welcome to Monster Fest song. Interestingly, in the TV special, Frankie creates and performs their own song for the festival which they sing as an acoustic and properly at the end, "Weave Your Own Web". This is not featured in the extended play, but rather the animated series' season 2 soundtrack. The version in the special is performed by iris menas, whilst the one on the soundtrack is performed by Amanda Kruger.

  • Trivia[]

    • This line was designed by Annalise Lao, who was challenged with lowering the prices for the dolls to enable more accessibility whilst also making them appealing with play value. This was achieved by working with different departments and prioritizing DIJ printing to add intricate details to the headband and necklace accessories.[2]
    • Lagoona's purse features an image of her rubber piranha Señor Squeaky, who is also briefly brought up in the TV special by Lagoona in a hallucinatory dream Frankie was imprisoned in. However, many fans who are unfamiliar with the TV series have mistakenly identified him as Neptuna.
    • The four main characters in this line have posters that are of their favorite Monster Fest performers.
      • Clawdeen's is of the Hissfits.
      • Cleo's is of Frankie Stein.
      • Lagoona's is of Catty Noir.
      • Frankie's poster was originally supposed to be of Phoenix, but this was changed to a group shot of all the characters for unknown reasons.
    • The packaging for this line was done by Charis Ceniseroz and Olga Tesler.[3]
    • In early developments, the line was originally called Electric Scare-nival. There would have been dolls for Pheonix and Honey Swamp (the latter having yet to make her G3 debut) and an additional camper playset.[4]
