2016 was the year Monster High switched from Generation 1 to Generation 2 with most characters from the 2010-2015 received new more child-like face molds and body sculpt or did not see a return at all.
Mattel decided to make the decision to reboot the franchise in order to target the younger demographic of kids rather than the previous tweens demographic the franchise was first intended to target. The line saw safer fashion choices with more bright colors rather than the edgy aesthetic Monster High was known for, a drop in quality with cheaper material and less details being used for the outfits, more reused accessories, and also more lines decided to cut the standard articulation of 11 moveable joints to the basic 5 joints.
Overall, 2016 was one of the most unpopular years. In order to fund the reboot, Mattel decided to take much of the budget put in Ever After High into Monster High so that they could fund the higher quality animation used in Welcome to Monster High film as well as the new face molds and body sculpt.
