Mattel fully realized the updated system to introduce new characters in 2013 that it had started in 2012. From 2013 on, new characters are no longer predominantly released in a 'Signature' subline, but rather in a TV special tie-in line or as a subline-less doll. The 'Signature' series continues in sublines, but they mainly feature characters with previous doll releases. The USAmerican setup of store-exclusive dolls continued, though 2013 saw no JCPenney exclusives, but instead introduced Justice exclusives. Of the new characters added in 2013, which were roughly as many as in 2012, Catrine DeMew has the most releases that same year.
In total, 2013 saw releases in twenty-three different lines, of which thirteen new, for a total of 84 items. There were thirteen new characters introduced and twenty-one store-exclusive items released.
