The Create-a-Monster line of doll parts was introduced to the franchise in late November, 2011. The line was inspired by fans' enthusiasm for making their own characters and adding them to the Monster High student body in personal play. From early on, Monster High has attracted astounding artists who made their characters into dolls by retooling and repainting official dolls. With Create-a-Monster, Mattel Corporate targets the less-experienced part of the fanbase, encouraging people to make and remake their own dolls from the parts sold.

Create-a-Monster comprises four types of products to create personal dolls. Starter packs contain two sets of parts for dolls of different species. However, the starter packs come with only one set of shoes, one wig, and one torso, meaning that only one doll at a time can be made from the materials in one starter pack, though later on an extra torso was added along with an extra outfit. Add-on packs contain one set of parts for one type of monster. These packs contain no upper arms, upper legs, or torsos, meaning that a starter pack has to be purchased to make a doll with with add-on pack parts, but Mattel has recently started selling the matching torsos separately. The Design Lab set contains a complete doll-worth of parts and several 'tattoos' showing facial and skin mark designs. With the included laboratory device, the set invites people to insert the parts and preferred 'tattoos' into the device, after which the doll sports the selected face and skin marks. Lastly, the lab add-on packs are packs containing additional parts to put into the Design Lab. Currently it seems the packs do not contain upper arms, upper legs or clothes, but they do come with two colors of heads.

The Create-a-Monster line is praised for the creative possibilities it adds to Monster High dolls, but it is and was also criticized for forcing people to buy multiple packs. With only an add-on pack, no doll can be made, and with a starter pack, only one doll can be made. If one were to combine an add-on pack and a starter pack, still only one doll could be created, while almost two full sets of part are rendered useless. Though this stimulates mix-and-matching with the available material, it leaves people charmed by the dolls the sets promise with no choice but to pay a lot more than for a regular doll. Moreso, because of the scarcity of certain bodyparts, the few there are are often a color mismatch to another parts set. However, Mattel has listened to these complaints and starter packs now contain two torsos, including current releases of the original ones.
